Wallpaper for a child's room or nursery: ideas and tips

Papier peint Wallnia aux tons pastel dans une chambre douce

Preparing a nursery or redoing a child's bedroom is always a lovely project. You want a soft, cheerful room that makes them want to play during the day and sleep at night. Wallpaper is an excellent way to get there: a single wall is enough to create a little world. Here are our tips for choosing well, without having to redo everything in two years.

Choose a pattern that grows with your child

Children's tastes change quickly. The very “baby” pattern you love today may feel tired by the age of 6 or 8. To make the wallpaper last, think of patterns that appeal at every age:

  • Sky and clouds: soft and dreamy, perfect for drifting off to sleep.
  • Animals and nature: foxes, birds, trees, flowers. When finely drawn, they stay beautiful for a long time.
  • Small flowers: romantic and light, they suit a nursery as well as a teenager's room.
  • Stripes and simple shapes: timeless and easy to match with furniture that changes.
  • Landscapes: mountains, sea, hills. As a mural, they open up the room like a window onto the outdoors.

Which colours for a child's room?

For a baby: soft tones

In a nursery, calm colours work best: soft blue, powder pink, sage green, beige, pale yellow. They create a restful atmosphere and go easily with wood and white.

For an older child: a little more character

From the age of 4 or 5, you can try bolder colours: a deeper blue, forest green, ochre, terracotta. Ideally, keep a soft base and add colour with accessories (cushions, rug, storage), which are easier to change.

Let your child take part

As soon as they are old enough, show them two or three patterns you like and let them choose. They will be proud of “their” room, and you can be sure of the result.

Which wall to choose?

  • The wall behind the bed: the most common choice. The pattern frames the bed and creates a cosy corner.
  • The wall of the play or reading corner: wallpaper marks out a special space, like a little den.
  • An attic room: wallpaper on the straight wall shows off the room.

One wall is enough. The other walls stay plain, in a colour taken from the pattern, so the room stays bright and calm.

Practical tips

Washable wallpaper

In a child's room, walls see a lot of life: fingerprints, pencil marks, little accidents. Our premium PVC-free non-woven wallpaper is washable: a soft, barely damp sponge is enough for most small stains. Dab without rubbing hard.

Plan around the furniture

Before choosing, think about where the bed, wardrobe and shelves will go. A large pattern or a mural looks best on a fairly clear wall. With made-to-measure, you choose the framing in the preview: for example, you can place the prettiest part of the image above the bed, where it will be seen.

Hang it before the baby arrives

If you are preparing a nursery, hang the wallpaper a few weeks before the birth. Let it dry well and air the room before putting the cot in place.

Simple hanging

With non-woven wallpaper, you paste the wall, not the paper. The 50 cm strips are numbered, so you just hang them in order. Allow one pot of paste for about 10 m². Our hanging guide explains every step.

Measure correctly

Made-to-measure wallpaper is printed to the dimensions you enter. Measure the width at three heights and the height in three places, keep the largest values and add 5 cm of margin. All the details are in our guide how to measure your wall. Not sure? Send us a photo of the wall with your measurements: we check for free before printing.

Our commitments

If you notice a printing defect within 14 days, we reprint for free. Because our wallpapers are made to measure, there is no right of withdrawal. And delivery is free.
