PVC-free non-woven wallpaper: everything you need to know

Lés de papier peint intissé Wallnia

When choosing a wallpaper, we look at the pattern and colour first. That is natural. But the material matters just as much: it decides whether hanging will be easy, whether the wall will stay beautiful for a long time and whether the wallpaper can be cleaned. At Wallnia, all our wallpapers are printed on a premium PVC-free non-woven paper. Here is what that means, in simple terms.

What is non-woven?

Non-woven is a material made of fibres that are neither woven nor knitted, but bonded together. For wallpaper, it is usually a blend of cellulose fibres (like paper) and textile fibres. The result is a backing that is both flexible and very strong.

It is often compared with classic paper wallpaper, which is older. Once on the wall, they look alike, but they behave quite differently.

The benefits of non-woven wallpaper

1. You paste the wall, not the paper

This is the big advantage when hanging. With classic wallpaper, you have to paste each strip, fold it, let it soak, then hang it. With non-woven, you simply roll the paste onto the wall and hang the dry strip. It is cleaner, faster and much easier if you are not a professional.

2. It stays stable

Classic paper swells slightly when wet with paste, then shrinks as it dries. This can open small gaps between strips. Non-woven does not distort during hanging: the strips stay edge to edge and the pattern lines up.

3. You can reposition it while hanging

As long as the paste is wet, you can gently peel off a badly placed strip and put it back. That is reassuring when hanging your first wallpaper.

4. It hides small flaws

Non-woven has a certain thickness. It does not replace good wall preparation, but it masks very small irregularities better than very thin paper.

5. It is easier to remove

When you want a change, non-woven wallpaper usually comes off much more easily than classic paper, often in large strips.

Why “PVC-free”?

PVC is a plastic. Some wallpapers have a layer of it on the surface. Our non-woven paper contains none. In practice, this means:

  • It is breathable: it lets the wall breathe, which is welcome on older walls.
  • It has a soft, matt look: colours look natural, with no shiny effect.

Washable: how to look after it

Our non-woven wallpaper is washable. For a small stain or a fingerprint:

  1. Take a soft sponge or a clean cloth.
  2. Dampen it with water, possibly with a drop of mild soap.
  3. Wring it out well: the sponge should be damp, not wet.
  4. Dab gently, without rubbing hard.

Avoid abrasive products, scratchy sponges and solvent-based cleaners.

How to hang non-woven wallpaper

Here are the main steps. Everything is explained in detail in our hanging guide.

  1. Prepare the wall: clean, dry, smooth and even. A primer is useful on a new or dark wall.
  2. Draw a vertical line with a spirit level for the first strip.
  3. Paste the wall across the width of one strip, using non-woven wallpaper paste.
  4. Hang the strips in order of their numbers, edge to edge, and smooth out the air bubbles with a spatula.
  5. Trim the excess at the top and bottom with a cutter and a new blade.

Allow one pot of paste for about 10 m². You can add our non-woven wallpaper paste to your order.

Numbered 50 cm strips

Our made-to-measure wallpapers arrive in strips 50 cm wide, cut to the height of your wall with a small margin. Each strip has a number: just follow the order and the pattern continues perfectly from one to the next. This width is easy to handle, even for a first-timer.
