Wallpaper behind the bed: ideas and measuring tips

Papier peint Wallnia derrière une tête de lit dans une chambre

In a bedroom, the wall behind the bed is the first one you see when you walk in. It is also the one you do not look at when lying down, so a bold pattern will not disturb your sleep. For these two reasons, the bed wall is the ideal place to try wallpaper. One wall, half a day of hanging, and the bedroom feels completely different. Here are our ideas by style, followed by our tips for measuring correctly.

Why wallpaper behind the bed?

  • It replaces a headboard. A beautiful pattern is enough to create a focal point, even with a simple divan bed.
  • It gives the room structure. The bed stands out and the bedroom looks more finished.
  • It is a small project. A bedroom wall is often between 7 and 10 m², so the budget and the work stay reasonable.

Ideas by style

Japandi and natural: for a calming bedroom

If calm is what you want most, choose neutral tones (linen, sand, warm grey) and understated patterns: fine lines, soft landscapes, light textures. Pair them with linen bedding, a light wood bedside table and a paper lamp. The result is soft, restful and timeless.

Romantic and floral: for a gentle bedroom

Small flowers, branches and botanical patterns create a tender, slightly countryside feel. In powdery colours or sage green, they stay light. To avoid an overloaded look, keep the other walls plain and choose bedding in one of the pattern's colours.

Chinoiserie: for a refined bedroom

Birds, flowering branches, gardens: chinoiserie adds an elegant touch, almost like a work of art above the bed. It works just as well in a classic bedroom as in a modern home. See our chinoiserie wallpaper collection.

Art Deco and deep colours: for a cosy cocoon

Midnight blue, dark green, touches of gold: deep colours give a chic hotel feel that is very enveloping. In a bedroom, this is a less daring choice than you might think, because a dark colour helps you unwind in the evening. Add a wall light on each side of the bed for a great effect. For inspiration: Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Murals: falling asleep in front of a landscape

A misty forest, mountains, a cloudy sky: a mural behind the bed makes the bedroom feel as if it opens onto the outdoors. With made-to-measure, you choose the framing in the preview: for example, you can place the most interesting part of the image just above the bed. See the wallpaper murals collection.

The whole wall or just part of it?

The simplest and most elegant solution is often to cover the whole wall, from floor to ceiling and from corner to corner. The result is clean, with no edges to finish.

You can also cover just a centred panel behind the bed, slightly wider than the bed, like a large headboard. In that case, mark the edges carefully with a spirit level before you start. A tip: allow at least 20 to 30 cm more than the width of the bed on each side, so the bedside tables are included.

Measuring your wall correctly

Made-to-measure wallpaper is printed to the exact dimensions you enter. Measuring is therefore the most important step. Here is the method in brief:

  1. Measure the width at three heights (top, middle, bottom) and keep the largest value.
  2. Measure the height in three places (left, centre, right), from the floor or the top of the skirting board to the ceiling, and keep the largest value.
  3. Add 5 cm of margin to the width and the height. This margin is trimmed with a cutter during hanging.

Tip: measure the wall without the bed, or at least keep the tape measure perfectly straight behind it. Do not subtract sockets or switches: you cut around them on site, so the pattern stays continuous.

Sloping wall: in an attic bedroom, measure the width at floor level and the greatest height, as for a rectangular wall. The excess in the slope is trimmed during hanging.

All the details are in our guide how to measure your wall. Not sure? Send us a photo of the wall with your measurements: we check your order for free before printing.

Hanging is easier than you think

Our wallpaper is non-woven: you paste the wall, not the paper. The 50 cm strips are numbered, so you simply hang them in order, edge to edge. Allow one pot of paste for about 10 m², so often a single pot for a bedroom wall. Our hanging guide explains every step.

Just move the bed away from the wall while hanging and let it dry for at least 24 hours before putting it back.

A wall that lasts

Our premium non-woven paper is PVC-free and breathable, which is pleasant in a room where you sleep. It is also washable: a small stain comes off with a damp sponge. And if you notice a printing defect within 14 days, we reprint for free.
