A wallpaper mural turns a wall into a landscape. In half a day of hanging, your living room opens onto a forest, your bedroom onto the sea or onto hills at sunset. It is one of the most spectacular ways to decorate a room. But for a beautiful result, you need to choose the image, the wall and the framing carefully. Here is our step-by-step guide.
What is a wallpaper mural?
Classic wallpaper repeats the same pattern across the whole surface. A mural, on the other hand, shows one large image that covers the entire wall: a landscape, a scene, a painted artwork, a sky. You read it like a giant painting, not like a texture.
It is also called a photo wallpaper or panoramic wallpaper. It is delivered in several strips that, hung side by side, recreate the whole image.
Why made-to-measure?
With a mural, made-to-measure makes all the difference:
- The image fits your wall. It is printed to the exact dimensions you enter, with no white band or randomly cropped section.
- You choose the framing. In the preview, you move the image to decide which part will be visible. That is exactly the framing we print.
- You can mirror the image in the preview, for example so the most interesting side ends up on the right side of the room.
- No waste. You only pay for the area of your wall, plus a small 5 cm margin.
Which image for which room?
The living room: a wall that takes you away
The living room is the ideal room for a mural. A landscape (forest, hills, mountains, coastline) on the wall behind the sofa adds depth and becomes the room's highlight. See our living room wallpaper selection.
The bedroom: a soothing image
In a bedroom, choose calm images: sky, mist, sea, soft landscapes and gentle colours. Behind the bed, the mural replaces the headboard. More ideas in our article wallpaper behind the bed.
The study: a horizon to breathe
An open landscape behind or opposite the desk gives a feeling of space, which helps when you spend the day in front of a screen.
Hallway, corridor, dining room
These spaces are often narrow or sparsely decorated. A mural with depth (a path, a horizon, the sea) visually “opens” them up.
The main image families
- Landscapes: forests, hills, mountains, dunes. See our landscape wallpapers.
- Sea and ocean: waves, sea horizons, views from above. See the sea and ocean collection.
- Art and painting: images in a painted style, like an artwork on the wall. See art and painting.
- Abstract: shapes, layers and colours, for a modern, graphic effect.
All our large-format images are gathered in the wallpaper murals collection.
Choosing the right wall
- A clear wall shows off the image. If the wall is interrupted by a door or a large piece of furniture, check in the preview that the important part of the image stays visible.
- The wall facing the entrance or behind the sofa often gives the best effect.
- Avoid the window wall: seen against the light, the landscape does not stand out.
Getting the framing right
This is the step that makes the difference. In the preview of each wallpaper, after entering your dimensions:
- Place the horizon at a pleasant height. A horizon just above the back of the sofa or the top of the bed often looks very natural.
- Keep the most beautiful detail (a tree, a wave, a peak) where it will be seen, not behind a wardrobe.
- Think about openings: a door or window will cut out part of the image. Move the framing so the essentials remain visible.
- Try the mirror option if the image looks better balanced the other way round.
Measuring correctly
Because the image is printed to your dimensions, measuring is essential:
- Measure the width at three heights and the height in three places, and keep the largest values.
- Add 5 cm of margin to the width and the height.
- Do not subtract doors, windows or sockets: you cut around them on site, and the image continues all around.
- For a mural that should continue across several walls, contact us before ordering.
All the details are in our guide how to measure your wall. Not sure? Send us a photo of your wall with your measurements: we check for free before printing.
Hanging
Our murals are printed on a premium PVC-free non-woven paper that is breathable and washable. Hanging is simple: you paste the wall, not the paper. The 50 cm strips are numbered: just hang them in order, edge to edge, and the image comes together perfectly. Start with a straight vertical line and allow one pot of paste for about 10 m². Follow our hanging guide step by step.
Price and delivery
Our made-to-measure non-woven wallpaper costs €34/m², with a minimum of 1.5 m². Production takes 3 to 5 working days, then delivery is free (2 to 4 days in Belgium, 3 to 7 days in Europe). For a worked example, read how much does made-to-measure wallpaper cost.
Because each mural is made for your wall, there is no right of withdrawal. However, if you notice a printing defect within 14 days, we reprint for free.
